Maker Space (-4:5)
The past couple of weeks have been spent creating a makerspace. This makerspace is being used to better inform students of engineering thoughts and ideas. Creating this is also my ILE, and I hope to let this run after we leave this school for many generations.
Presenting (-2:9)
In the past couple of weeks at Help Desk, the semester has ended and our ILE presentations were due. We also had a guest speaker from Netflix come and talk to us about his interesting and technological career.
Netflix Presentation The Chief Security Engineer from Netflix joined us on the fifth of February, giving us a brief presentation on his job and what he does. He mentioned all types of hacks and problems, along with how they deal with them. They have this complicatedly designed system called F.I.D.O that auto-detects if many of the problems that come are actual threats. I learned a lot of cool things from him and I may be interested in pursuing his career! Digital LiteracyThe entire Help Desk has also been given an assignment. We have been split into groups and each given a lesson. We are creating Powerpoints and other visual aids to explain our lessons to the kids at foothill in the future. This is an interesting topic and I can't wait to present at foothill!

Building and Creating
Within the past couple of weeks at Help Desk, I have created and done some pretty 'techy' things I never thought I would be able to do.
Zuluagas Laptop While sitting through my Spanish class, I noticed that my teacher had a laptop with a non-functioning disc drive. I went up and informed here that I could take a look at it and see what I could do, knowing that we had a broken laptop with a functioning disc drive. I then swapped out the disc drives and fixed up her laptop |
Getting Work Done.
The past couple of weeks at Help desk were very productive, doing many things for many teachers.
QR Coding
This week at help desk was interesting, I helped out more teachers this week than all other weeks here combined.
The past two weeks, I have been making QR codes for many teachers in Northgate. A couple of the many teachers I have helped are Mr. Lubbe, Mrs. Zuluaga, Mr. Tubio, and Mr. Tobin. The Codes I have been giving them are On two separate sheets; One has a code for a Tardy Pass, Another has a code for a Hall Pass It is really interesting watching the school evolve around the technology we are providing with Help Desk, and I am privileged to help in a working such as this. |
Ready. Set. Science!
Recently I have been working with many of the science teachers, working on their websites and doing work.
Surveys This week was another successful week with Mr. Taylor. I, for my ILE, have been doing surveys in his class concerning homework and other vital class elements (pun intended). He has been very cooperative and its is awesome working with him. Science Department This week also, Michael and I went to Mrs. Starrs room to talk and discuss about the Science Department website. We went Friday, A period and we talked about the content of the website. She then gave us access to it and we are currently working on it. Can't wait to see what we can do with it! |
Getting Noticed (9/19-10/9)
As Help Desk is becoming noticed and respected, we are being asked for more help and we are doing more teacher based projects;
iPads Last week, Michael (A friend at help desk) and I were helping the German teacher, Frau Marek, with getting video's from her school iPads to her computer. We were then bombarded with a mountain of restrictions, from the inability of taking a screenshot to being unable to access your email. These are few of the 41 bizarre restrictions on the school iPads. That's not the main problem though, its giving the teachers that are trying to use technology at our school hesitance to try activities using technology. We talked to the principle about this issue and it turns out they are already working for a "fix" for this problem. Surveys Within this last week, I have been conducting surveys in my Honors Chemistry classroom, with the permission of the teacher, about the length of time it takes students to complete their homework. The teacher, Mr. Tayor, said that he would love to have this data and we should do this on a weekly basis. |
Jumping into the rest of the year (9/6-9/18)
The past few weeks at Help Desk were majestic and productive. Here are a couple of things I did;
Youtube
I was asked to make a Powtoon for Open House. For my first project, I was quite impressed with it, but it could definitely be improved. Upon being requested to create the video, I also took the responsibility of creating the youtube channel. I am excited for where this project will take me.
Google Ninja
This week, we also tried out Google Ninja, a program that teaches you how to use various google apps such as Google Docs, Gmail, Youtube, etc... This program didn't work out for us because most of the team were decently experienced with google and their apps, so this program was not designed for people who are technologically advanced, maybe for the people who need help understanding such programs.
